Princeton City Council approves second reading of medical marijuana ordinance | Health

PRINCETON – A second reading Monday of an ordinance amending Princeton city law opened the way for medical marijuana dispensaries to set up shops in the city’s business district.

Last May, Princeton City Council had the first reading for an ordinance amending Article 1345 District Uses and Article 1345.01, Zoning Schedule of Use Controls, in the city code. The changes will allow medical marijuana dispensaries in the city’s C-2 industrial park.

Mayor David Graham said during the city council meeting that the C-2 business park includes Stafford Drive and Rogers Street.

Attorney Trent Crewe, representing City Attorney Paul Cassell, conducted the second reading of the proposed changes, and Graham opened a public hearing to allow citizens of the city to comment.

Graham asked if anyone had any comments or questions about the amendments and none were tabled. The public hearing then closed and council members voted to adopt the changes. The second reading was adopted unanimously.

Councilor James V. Hill said the city’s ordinance on medical marijuana dispensaries would be in line with state regulations.

In 2020, lawmakers enacted regulations that allow pharmacies to stock medical marijuana products. The regulations determine where medical marijuana pharmacies can be located. According to the city ordinance, pharmacies are not allowed within 300 meters of public schools, private schools, daycare centers, parish schools or similar institutions.

Graham previously told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that no one had applied to open a medical marijuana business in the city, but the city could start maintaining them.
