Lockable, smell-proof bags to promote marijuana safety being given away in Jackson County
2 min readJACKSON COUNTY, MI – The Jackson County Health Department gives marijuana users and carers odor-proof bags with a built-in lock to promote marijuana safety education.
To ensure a safe home environment for children, health ministry officials encourage marijuana users to use this type of bag to hold their products.
“We want parents and caregivers who use products – medicinal or recreational, now that both are legal – to make sure they are out of their children’s hands,” said Alison Spencer, the Department of Health’s health educator.
Jackson County residents can call the health department at 517-768-2138 to schedule an appointment to receive the free bag. The bags will be handed out with no questions asked and come with an education folder, officials said.
“We have a strong focus on education and outreach related to storage and use,” said Spencer. “We need to ensure that parents and carers, whether they use medical or recreational products, do not put them in the hands of their children.”
The bags were bought with grants aimed at marijuana safety education and outreach, officials said.
The county health department gave away 367 of these bags in 2020 and plans to distribute 450 bags in 2021. The cosmetic-sized odor-proof bags come with a combination lock that can be adjusted by the owner to keep the products out of the reach of children and pets.
“While medical marijuana can have certain adult benefits, studies have shown that it can be very harmful to a child’s brain development,” officials said.
