Suffrage rally organizers asked the governor to convene a special session after the Mississippi Supreme Court rejected a voter-approved medical marijuana initiative. The ruling on Initiative 65 holds medical marijuana in the state. It also challenged the entire electoral initiative process. In November 2020, Mississippi passed Initiative 65, with 74% of voters voting in favor of the measure. State lawmakers on both sides of the aisle believe that the electoral initiative process should be improved.
