Southern Sky Brands aims to bring medical marijuana facility to Canton

CANTON, Miss. (WJTV) – Medical marijuana legalization in Mississippi is still up in the air. Earlier this year, the Mississippi Supreme Court did overturned a medical marijuana initiative that voters approved last fall.

However, one company is making headway with its plans in Madison County. There is vacant lot on South Lake Circle near the Nissan Canton plant that is being remodeled.

“Southern Sky Brands is a cannabis facility we’re building here in Canton to support Mississippi’s medical marijuana program,” said Steve Merrit, COO of Southern Sky Brands.

Merrit said he watched people’s lives change from using the products in the other locations he has in the northeast.

“I’ve seen real people get real relief and help with my own eyes,” he said.

Co-founder Justin Mahfouz is on the same page.

“We are at the beginning of the iceberg, so to speak, and what this drug can do for people. We are very excited and determined to do the right thing and the right project for the Mississippi people, ”said Mahfouz.

The two men said they have received a lot of support for their business plan and believe that the green light is in the near future.
