What you should know about CBD oil? Benefits, side effects, and legality

3 min read

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is an extract from Cannabis sativa (marijuana plant). CBD oil only contains CBD as an active ingredient after excluding tetrahydrocannabinol [THC] or terpenes. It doesn’t have the same psychoactivity, but it becomes a potent sedative and hallucinogenic agent, an excellent remedy for relieving pain and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of marijuana or certain drugs. The oil is made from the CBD extract of the cannabis plant and further diluted with a carrier oil such as coconut or hemp seed oil. Because of its therapeutic benefits, CBD is gaining traction in health sciences for relieving chronic pain and anxiety.

What are its uses?

As pain relief
The human body produces endocannabinoids, a neurotransmitter that binds to cannabinoid receptors to regulate vital functions of the nervous system including pain. CBD affects the activity of the endocannabinoid receptor, reducing inflammation and the interaction with neurotransmitters. Henceforth, it has been shown to be effective in relieving pain in diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

As an antidepressant
CBD has the ability to act on the brain’s serotonin receptors that regulate neurological activities such as mood, anxiety, aggression, and social behavior. Hence, it is used to treat insomnia, anxiety, depression, or other post-traumatic stress disorder. Reduce cancer-related symptoms
The chemotherapy involved in cancer treatment leads to certain symptoms such as nausea, pain, or cognitive problems. One study shows that a one-on-one combination of CBD and THC given via oral spray reduces chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting. CBD helps reduce cancer-related symptoms and even contains cancer-fighting properties.

Prevents acne
CBD oil prevents sebum cells from secreting excessive sebum and even strives for anti-inflammatory effects by limiting the activation of “pro-acne” agents such as inflammatory cytokines. Neuroprotective property
Because CBD acts on the endocannabinoid system and other receptors of the neural system, it shows a valued effect in the treatment of neurological conditions such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.

Heart health
CBD has powerful antioxidant and stress-reducing properties that help reduce inflammation and cell death associated with the heart. Because of these anxiety and stress relieving properties, CBD can help lower blood pressure.

While there is much research to be done about the effectiveness and safety of CBD, recent studies show that it is a safe, effective natural treatment for many health problems. The legality of CBD depends on its type and origin, as CBD products made from hemp (containing less than 0.3 percent THC) are centrally legal for medical use, but are still illegal under some state laws. The CBD derived from marijuana is centrally illegal but remains legal under some state laws. However, the over-the-counter CBD products are not approved by the FDA.
